Traditional, Contemporary, Traditional or Contemporary.... that is the question??

Most of you who have been to my blog know that I am mostly a contemporary quilter. But the person who first introduced me to quilting when I was just a teenager, was a traditional hand quilter. I didn't learn to quilt then, or from her. She passed away before I took the plunge. But when she did, her daughter, my best friend, gave me a box with some of her quilting stuff.... fabrics, books, tools, etc....

I have been quilting since 1999 and have made many a quilting present for friends and family. Well, about a month ago while on a weekend getaway with my friend, she commented twice that she didn't own a 'Renee' quilt. OH MY, how did I let that happen. My first thought was, I have to remedy that. But, for the last month I have been in a tizzy.

Just like her mother, my friend loves traditional things. Her home, her decorating, her style of dress is entirely traditional. She has purchased quilts over the years from various quilt shows, including the Kutztown, Pa. Fair... all traditionally made hand quilts in blues, burgundy, greens and creamy beige. Not my style at all!

So what to do?? Do I make her something that fits her style and home ---- OR ---- do I make her a 'Renee' quilt. An artsy, contemporary piece full of color, done all by machine???

I am definitely at a loss....

This is my opinion, but only an opinion. It seems to me if she wants a quilt from you, she would want the kind of quilt that you like to do. Because that would say Renee to her. But then you could ask her also. When I decide to make a quilt for someone that would like one, I always sit with them and find out what they want.

Perhaps take a Renee twist on something quite traditional. This can go a couple of ways
1) something in your colors that is a quite traditional quilt
2) something in her colors that has a Renee twist to it
Knowing you, what has you in the tizz is the thinking/working outside your box. I've seen quilts from you that are way outside what I would call "Renee" that have been spectacular. Think of that quilt you did 3 or 4 years ago using white as the background. I would never have thought that came from you!
I can hardly wait to see what you come up with!

Well, I definitely know that it will be a Renee with a twist, but I am still trying to figure out what the twist will be. In fact, outside of my bright colors, I am not sure that I have a specific 'style'. Nothing other than that I like to try a lot of different things, which usually don't happen to be traditional, even though my Lone Star, Hunter Star and Feather Stars are quite traditional...just done in brights and/or batiks. Any Teri, yes I do like white. In fact, the two pieces I am working on now have white as a background :-).

A new project is alway fun to think about. If she wants a "Renee Quilt" then I would think that she wants something that comes from your heart and is completely you - which means it is your style all the way. Maybe this is your friend's opporutnity to have her box pushed.

I think she wants a quilt from you by you. She must like your quilts to have said anything. I would make something in her colors, but with your style. Something that reflects your relationship with her.
